My Experience
The event that I choose to attend was a girlscout leadership meeting. This meeting was held on Rowan University's campus in the Cambell Library from 1-3pm on October 11, 2012 and was open to all that wished to attend. They advertised this meeting by announcing that as an activity, we were going to be making friendship bracelets. I was curious to how the leaders of this event were going to go about this activity, so my roomates and I attended. I was not very interested in learning about the leadership process, but since I enjoy arts and crafts I wanted to learn a new skill.

Throughout the meeting a variety of different friendship bracelets were created. At first the leader got right into making bracelets and did not explain the steps in depth. Since it was the first time that I had attended a meeting like this, I was immedietly confused and had to ask for assistance. Prior knowledge about creating friendship bracelets would have been very useful at this event.
As I look some people were already literate in this subject matter because they were going ahead of the instructor and creating their own bracelets designed with patterns that they had already learned to create, while others were also confused.
I was not the only person that attended that was new to making friendship bracelets. Once the leader of the event realized that people did not have as much experience in this field that she did, she slowed down and demonstrated step by step procedures.
Once the steps were demonstrated, the task became easier, and many people caught on, but others were still struggling. There are different patterns available to choose from that are on different levels of difficulty, but not all people in attendence where aware of this information. Full explanation and demonstrations were definetly needed in oreder to make this event successful.
By attending this event and not being fully literate on the subject it was a struggle. It made me realize that the next time I attend an event I should research information on the given subject ahead of time.
I have created a basic introduction of friendships bracelets in this website. The information that I included was introduced at the event, as well as through further research when I got home.

The History of Friendship Bracelets

"Knot-tying arts have developed independently in different parts of the world. Some of the earliest decorative knots from China still in existence today are from the period 481 to 221 B.C., according to the County of Middlesex Cultural and Heritage Commission. Over time, the Chinese developed many uses for knots, including clothing decoration, buttons and household objects. Macrame, a craft of tying knots to create intricate patterns, is said to have developed in 13th-century Arabia. Arabian weavers are thought to have started creating knotted patterns with the fringe at the edges of items made on a loom. In following centuries, the practice traveled to Italy and France.Sailors picked up this knot-tying practice to pass the time at sea. To this day, the basic knots used in macrame are the same knots that are an invaluable part of the sailors' knot-tying repertoire: the half knot, the square knot and the half hitch knot. Macrame became popular in 19th-century Britain and was revived in the U.S. in the 1960s; although its popularity waned in the following decades, macrame appeared alive and well during the beginning of the 21st century. Life Script suggests that the friendship bracelet is a direct descendant of Central American Indian crafts. The friendship bracelet first appeared in the U.S. during the 1970s when it was popular to wear ethnic items." (Kukosk 2012)
